The Process:

Your team will visit some Web sites that function well and are attractive to your eyes. You will also visit some student Webfolios (also known as Digital or Electronic Portfolios) to evaluate how their respective Webmasters use backgrounds, fonts, images and navigation to communicate their message to you. You will use the DesignQuest Guide Sheet to answer questions as you visit these sites.

But before starting the Guide Sheet, let's take a look at what a UPS 5th grader's well-designed and attractive Webfolio looks like so you know where you are headed in the next month! Even though the 5th grade Webfolio doesn't have any content, you will find it attractive and easy to navigate around in.

Just click the beautiful picture above and a new browser will open with the 5th grader's Webfolio. When you finish clicking through the Webfolio, just close the browser window by either clicking the "X" in the top right corner or going to FILE>CLOSE.

Digital or Electronic Portfolios are terms that mean the same thing as Webfolios. Webfolio is what people are using now. The key is making one's content (e.g., poetry, pictures, essays) digital...electronic...Web-based so that others can easily view it.

The DesignQuest Guide Sheet is provided to assist you in recording your research. It provides "the process" for this WebQuest. As you learn about what good design is, record the information under the questions in the Guide Sheet.

Working In Your Team
The Process of this WebQuest

Step 1: Four research teams will be formed... the font team, background team, images team and navigation team. Put your name on your DesignQuest Guide Sheet. If your teacher hasn't already printed them out, you can print them out from the links below.

Background  Word    Web
Font
Word    Web
 Images
Word    Web
 Navigation
Word    Web

Your team will then go to the computers where your team should break up into pairs. Each pair uses one computer to visit the designated Web sites that you will evaluate by answering the questions in the DesignQuest Guide Sheet.

Step 2: The background, font and images teams will look at the student electronic portfolios from a high school in the USA. The navigation team will review the Web sites for CNN, Bloomberg, Apple and a 5th grader's Webfolio.

All the teams are to go through the Web sites answering the questions on their Guide Sheet.  Remember that you don't have to agree as you write down your answers to the questions. But do share your opinions!

Step 3: After you evaluate the different Web sites and complete your Guide Sheets, you will be put into new teams. These teams will be a mixture of background, font, images and navigation team members. You will then either download a copy of the DesignQuest Blueprint for Success form or your teacher will give you a copy. You will now be an expert ready to share your top Web site tips to be written into the Blueprint For Success form. This is the form that you will then give to your cousin who is applying to university. She will use it to create her own Webfolio!
