Where is Buddhism?

Map: Buddhism traveled in 2 different directions from where the Buddha lived in Bodh Gaya, India.  The spread and changes took place over 2500 years.  Today Buddhism is the belief of 1 out of 8 people in the world and most of the followers live in Southeast Asia.

Trace the spread of Buddhism with your finger.  On the map, the yellow sections show one kind of Buddhism that developed.  The blue sections show a different kind of Buddhism that developed.  But the basic teachings were the same.

Stories from Buddhism:

Buddha spreads his teachings:  4 Noble Truths.
How did Buddha meditate and become enlightened?  Sitting under the Bodhi Tree
Story to teach "Respect for Elders"

Teachings of Buddhism:

Buddha taught the ideas that he felt would spread peace.  People could feel more peace inside and spread it to the world if they were not violent, and if they followed the Eightfold Path.
Four Noble Truths and Eight-fold Path:

Scroll partway down the page to the Wheel where it says,  "What is Dharma." Learn how the Buddha is seen to help cure people's sufferings... like a doctor.  He prescribes the 8-fold path.

Take a 4 question quiz at the bottom of that page.

Practicing Buddhism--

What Buddhists do:

Children sing songs with words of prayer:

Children's songs you can hear, or the words (lyrics) you can read.  Do they say things you have heard in other religious songs?  What's similar?  What's different?

Buddhists read lessons and meditate:

Buddhists believe that people should show loving kindness and compassion towards others.  Read about it. Learn about a meditation that Buddhists use to help them spread loving kindness.

Buddhists may visit temples to meditate.  They focus on the image of Buddha to remember what he taught.  Buddha is not a god to them.  He is simply someone who learned a great deal and sets a good example.  His teachings help people to overcome their suffering and achieve peace inside, and peace for the world.

Remember that Buddhism started in India and Siddartha lived where there were many Hindus.  Many Hindus view Buddha as one of the incarnations (avatars) of Vishnu (the way that the fish and the turtle were.)  In that way, Hindus might see him as a god.  But Buddhists don't.

Buddhists may live as monks or nuns for a short period of their lives to increase their learning.  They live at a monastery to learn from teachers.

Some Buddhists celebrate a festival called Purnima.  It is held to celebrate the time when Buddha became enlightened.   Festival in India
