UPS Information & Communication Literacy (ICL) Standards & Benchmarks
 


The HKIS Information &  Communication Mission Statement:

 In a world of challenge and change, we will equip adult and student learners with empowering skills, literacies and technologies to pursue answers to their questions, to problem solve and to communicate effectively.


1. Students will acquire, adapt and apply knowledge by:

  1. Reflecting upon performance, accepting feedback and improving work;
  2. Demonstrating solid understanding of concepts/skills;
  3. Applying and adapting knowledge and skills to new situations;
  4. Meeting the stated standards and benchmarks;
  5. Recognizing that the pursuit of knowledge is a life-long journey.

 



2) Students will acquire information by:

  1. Asking significant questions that generate exploration, inquiry and new knowledge;
  2. Choosing strategies to effectively and efficiently complete a task or goal;
  3. Evaluating and selecting appropriate tools to fulfill a task or goal;
  4. Reflecting on the appropriateness of strategies and modifying approach as needed;
  5. Accessing information efficiently and effectively by reading, listening and viewing;
  6. Evaluating information critically and competently;
  7. Using information actively, creatively, and ethically;
  8. Using technology and media resources effectively, efficiently, and ethically to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.


3) Students will reflect and think critically by:

  1. Identifying and summarizing the problem/question;
  2. Recognizing a source’s point-of-view;
  3. Analyzing evidence and recognizing the need for additional information;
  4. Using logical thinking and reasoning skills (such as comparison, classification, sequencing, cause/effect, patterning, webbing, analogies, deductive and inductive reasoning, forecasting, planning, hypothesizing, and critiquing) to draw warranted conclusions;
  5. Justifying inferences, opinions, assumptions, and reasons;
  6. Reflecting upon the validity of their conclusions.
 


4) Students will reflect and think critically by:

  1. Producing multiple ideas or responses;
  2. Keeping an open mind, perceiving and examining things differently and from different points of view;
  3. Expanding, developing, and embellishing ideas by adding details and making changes;
  4. Demonstrating curiosity, seeking additional information and alternatives;
  5. Exhibiting a willingness to take chances, defend ideas, experience, predict, and put plans into action;
  6. Visualizing and imagining plans, thoughts, ideas, outcomes and consequences;
  7. Communicating their ideas in novel or unexpected ways.
 


5) Students will communicate effectively through an appropriate medium whether aural, written or visual presentation by;

  1. Clearly expressing the main idea or theme and providing suitable support and detail;
  2. Presenting information in a style and tone consistent with the audience’s level of interest and level or knowledge or understanding;
  3. Using different methods of communications and applying the conventions and rules of those methods in customary ways;
  4. Using effective techniques to communicate a clear purpose;
  5. Creating a product that clearly meets conventional standards.
  6. Choosing appropriate media for effective delivery.

Good Design:
Using principles of good design is a major theme of the Technology Integration program. A design assessment is included in grade level multimedia projects. See an example.
