Student Recommendations: HKIS students are wild about books! Read some student recommendations here! Students can write recommendations and earn Reading Counts points for their class. See how! Other Recommended Reading Lists: Habits of Mind - help students develop the 16 Habits of Mind outlined by Art Costa as important for lifelong learning. These books feature characters that demonstrate the habits, or who develop certain habits in the course of the novel. Nonfiction books, also, appear on the list. (Note: the software that the library uses to produce personalized reading lists generates lists of books available in print but does not rate them according to their literary value. Our library will not have in its collection all of the books that will appear on the student's individualized list.) Students in the Upper Primary participate in Scholastic's Reading Counts! program. It helps them to identify books in our library's huge collection that match their interests and reading level and encourages a lifelong love of reading. Reading comprehension quizzes check for understanding and track progress and improvements. Incentives are built in to encourage even reluctant readers to participate along with their classmates.
