Pizza Party |
Kids look at the
pizza pie and select from multiple choice the fraction representing the amount that is
still left to eat. |
Introductory/
very basic |
Clear, basic intro.
Easy to use. |
| 2. |
Visual Fractions with lines |
Kids examine
number line with arrow pointing to value. They supply the numerator and denominator to
represent the value shown. Game prompts for corrections. |
Simple fractions.
Medium challenge. |
Nice! Offers
clear visuals. |
| 3. |
Thirteen Ways to
Half |
Students must
shade in the parts of a whole to demonstrate the ways to combine those parts to make 1/2. |
Of "early
learner" interest. |
Cute graphics and
explanation. |
| 4. |
Visual Fractions with circles |
Kids examine
circle shaded sections. Kids supply the numerator and denominator to represent the value
shown. Game prompts for corrections. |
Simple fractions. |
Nice! |
| 5. |
Brainpop's
Intro to Adding and Subtracting Fractions |
By clicking
"play" for the movie, you get a demonstration of fractions and the vocabulary
(numerator, denominator, lowest common denominator) used when performing addition and
subtraction. You can take a quiz to practice the new skills and reinforce the
vocabulary. |
Runs a little
fast. But if you have studied the ideas a little ahead, this is a nice review and
challenge. |
Can only view 2
movies/quizzes at this site per day (or 1 movie twice.) If you become a subscriber, you get unlimited access. |
| 5.5 |
Dividing
up Cookies |
Select
the number of friends and then flavor of cookies you will divide
up to feed them equally. Grab and drop the cookies, then use
the cookie cutter to provide equal fractions of cookies to keep
things fair. |
Can
demonstrate simple and complex fractions.
A good visual aid to see how
fractions are used to provide fair and equal portions. |
Last
step is a little hard to understand how to do. Grab
and drop to "give the cookies out."
Click "tally" to see the
numerical fractions. |
| Advanced: |
| 6. |
Mixed Fractions with lines |
Kids examine
number line with arrow pointing to value. They supply the numerator and denominator to
represent the value shown. Game prompts for corrections. |
Mixed number
fractions greater than 1 whole. |
Nice! |
| 7. |
Mixed Fractions with circles |
Kids examine
circles' shaded sections. Kids supply the numerator and denominator to represent the value
shown. Game prompts for corrections. |
Mixed fractions. |
Nice! A bit easier
to manage than line exercise above. |
| 8. |
Find Grampy |
Grampy is hiding
behind a hedge. Estimate the fraction that represents the distance from the left end of
the hedge. |
Strong challenge. |
Creative
reinforcement of concept of numerator and denominator. |
| 9. |
Renaming mixed numbers to fractions with
lines |
Fraction is
indicated on a line. Computer prompts you to name the fraction
then provides a
higher denominator to get you to rename it in higher terms (example: 3/5 is renamed as
6/10) |
|
Line segments are a
little hard to discern on the screen when the values get large. |
| 10. |
Rename in higher terms with circles |
Same as
above
using pie charts. |
|
|
| 11. |
Rename in lowest terms with lines. |
Line shows
fraction value. Students need to re-name the fraction in lowest terms. |
|
Next on list is
easier to interpret? |
| 12. |
Rename in lowest terms with circles. |
Same as
above
but using pie chart. |
|
|
| 13. |
Find Grampy Strict |
Grampy is hiding
behind a hedge. Estimate the mixed number fraction that represents the distance from the
left end of the hedge. |
|
Great game. Prompts
student to express fraction in lowest terms. |
| 14. |
Fractions: Add, Subtract Fractions,
Multiply and Divide. |
Scroll to center
of page. Options exist to drill using number lines or pie charts. |
|
Excellent! Number
lines are a little hard to work with when number values are high. Use pie charts
instead? |
| 14.5 |
Fractions:
Addition modeled |
Fill
in the green and blue boxes for numerators and denominators.
Click the "go" button on the toolbar. Watch the
fractions get added.
Click on the "options"
toolbox on top to apply new settings because you can choose to
view the fractions as circles, sections of a bar, items in a set
and more. |
Great
to demonstrate the re-naming and addition of fractions. Can
be set to demonstrate more quickly or more slowly. Various
ways of modeling are provided. |
MUST
SEE!!!!
Very engaging and impressive!
Makes the addition and conversion
of fractions very visual!

Flashcards Non-Java "Fraction
Inequalities" |
Students see 2
fractions and must adjust the sign to indicate which is "greater than" the
other. Students need to select the >, < or = sign by scrolling to the correct option
to enter. |
|
Need to scroll to
the correct section to select game under "non Java" Not the most pleasing

Scroll to
Non-Java "Multiplying and Simplifying
Fractions" |
After inputting
the settings as described at right, students are challenged with a fraction multiplication
problem. They are asked to then simplify the answer into lowest terms. |
Input the maximum
numerator and denominator to set the level of the challenge. (Might require teacher
support.) |
Although the
graphics are not terribly appealing, the challenge is a good one once you get it launched. |
| 17. |
Add
and Subtract fractions Advanced
|
Cartoon movie
demonstrates the addition and subtraction of fractions. Introduces "mixed
number", "lowest common denominator." Can
follow the movie by doing the quiz. Quiz does not reduce fractions to their lowest terms
and uses negative numbers. The quiz is above the anticipated challenge given the
simplicity of the movie. |
Movie runs a
little fast if this is the intro to the concept. Better as reinforcement. |
Can only view 2
movies/quizzes at this site per day (or 1 movie twice.) If you become a subscriber, you get unlimited access. |
| 18. |
Fresh Baked Fractions |
4 fractions are
shown. 3 of them are equivalent fractions. Student reduces them to lowest terms be able to
click on the one that doesn't belong. |
4 levels of the
game are given with increasingly large numbers in the more challenging versions. |
Good. |
| 19. |
Match the Fractions to
the Decimal Equivalents
or
Match
Fractions
|
Operates like a
"matching" game like the card game "concentration" because all values
are hidden. Student clicks on the tiles 2 at a time to match the fraction to the decimal
equivalent. |
All numbers less
than one whole. |
Not the greatest.
Perhaps as a one or two-time activity at most. |
| 20. |
Equivalent
Fraction Fireworks |
Student
is challenged to dial the numerator or denominator to create an
equivalent fraction. Press the red button to check answer
and "launch" the firework. The firework displays
the visual of the fraction. |
Engaging
with good graphics. |
Requires
headphones. The only buttons that seem to work are the arrow
"dial" buttons and red "launch" button
in this online version. |
| 21. |
Fractions and Decimals memory game |
Same as above. |
Can select 4
levels of increasing challenge. Not as user
friendly as above option. |
At opening screen,
student must select from the symbols list, "fractions and decimals." Pop up advertisements exist. |
| 22. |
Match the equivalent
ratios. |
Operates like a
"matching" game like the card game "concentration" because all values
are hidden. Student clicks on the tiles 2 at a time to match the fraction to its
equivalent ratio. |
Challenge is more
to the memory. Not for the beginner. |
Not the greatest.
Perhaps as a one or two-time activity at most. |

Math
Safari |
As an intro to
this web site, this quiz provides 10 word problems, including several about fractions.
After student gives the answer, a map of the world enables them to examine the percentage
of correct answers in countries around the world. Throughout the quiz, graphics play that
demonstrate mathematical concepts. They might be distracting, but they also illustrate
math's relevance to real situations and reinforce math vocabulary. |
High level of
challenge: word problems on fractions and computation. |
Students must
complete "registration" (using nickname only) before they run the game. That
enables their data to be included in country comparisons. A one-time experience. |
| 24. |
The Real Challenge |
40 minute math
test of word problems. Students can complete it in less time. Upon completion, the
student's results are compared to students around the world. |
A great
challenge. |
Quite a time
commitment! Don't click "submit quiz results" unless you've properly completed
the quiz. Otherwise, it will skew HK's average! |
