Kangaroo Island 

 

Kangaroo Island has retained many plants and animals no longer found in Australia because of its separation from the mainland nine thousand years ago. The abundance of unique flora and fauna, plus the undisturbed beauty of rivers and coastlines offers unparalleled wildlife experiences as you commune with nature.

Macropus rufus

The red kangaroo is endemic to Kangaroo Island. They are harvested for their meat and skins.

 

Phascolarctos cinereus

The Koala is not native to Kangaroo Island but was introduced in order to preserve the species. It did so well that in 1998 it was decided that they should be culled in order to stop the devastation to the natural environment.

Neophoca cinerea

The Australian Sea-lion colony is Sea Bay is the third largest in the world apx. 600. They were protected form exploitation because of a coral reef outside their breeding area.

There are only 3000 -5000 left in the world.
The Cape Barrens goose was an endangered  species introduced to the island. It has done so well that it has been taken off of the endangered list.

 

 

Dacelo novaeguineae

The Blu-winged Kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family. The calls that a group makes while claiming their territory sounds like laughter.
