What is a "Share"?

If you are at school you can publish to the DragonNet directly through the network. This means that you will have the area(s) of the DragonNet that your Novell account has permission to access and load them as separate drives on your computer. To put a drive on your computer that is a network link to the DragonNet server is refereed to as ‘Mapping’ that drive.

For example, in the image below the highlighted drive is ‘wwwroot’ (the share name) on ‘DragonNet’ (the name of the server.) When you map your share name, the drive letter will be different but will appear in the same format on your computer.

How to "Map" the Drive

You should only have to do this once, on subsequent logins to the computer the drive will automatically connect.

  1. Minimize all open windows so that only your Desktop is showing.
  2. You should see "My Computer" in the corner of the screen. Click on this with the right mouse button and select "Map Network Drive." The box illustrated below should appear.
  3.

Without changing the drive letter, type ‘\\dragonnet\’ into the path box. This indicates to Windows that you want to connect to the DragonNet server. Next type the name of your share. For example, if you were going to connect to the Lower Primary Cluster 5B type in:

    \\dragonnet\LP-5B

  5. Check the box marked: ‘Reconnect at Login’
  6. Click on 'OK'
  7. Now open "My Computer" by double clicking. You should see your shared drive amongst all the other network drives.

If this does not work please contact the technology coordinator in your building.

Once you have mapped the drive

To ‘Publish to the DragonNet’ all you have to do is drag, or paste, the files that you want to appear on the Internet into your mapped drive. Once you have done this initially you will only have to copy the files you have changed when you edit your web site. Alternatively you can work directly out of the DragonNet and not store your files on your local computer. This is probably the easiest option as it will avoid any confusion about which files are more recent.

When using FrontPage there is also the option to ‘Publish’ the web-site. To do this when FrontPage asks for the location of the web site simply type in the drive letter for your share. Test pages thoroughly that have been published in this manner as it is quite unreliable.

If you want a demonstration or instruction on how to use FrontPage to publish to the DragonNet contact dragonnet@hkis.edu.hk or call David Elliott in the HS technology department.

How to obtain a share

To obtain a share so that you can publish to the DragonNet please contact Justin Hardman (justin_hardman@hkis.edu.hk) or David Elliott (delliott@hkis.edu.hk).
