As of today, we are about a month behind schedule due to the wettest June in Hong Kong since records began. However, given the weather progress has been swift and the time consuming subsurface work is scheduled to be completed early next week. This will enable the final stage of the field installation to begin. This involves lining the surface of the field with 10 mm thick padding, which will be overlaid with the artificial turf fabric itself. Our new “Go Dragons” scoreboard and floodlights will be installed while the artificial turf is being laid. We expect all this work to take about a month. This means we are on track for an October 1, 2008 field opening.

As a result, we anticipate minimal disruption to our field sport programs. What’s more, with the new field supporting all weather and evening usage, any field time lost in the first weeks of the school year will be more than made up for during the remainder of the first semester.

2007-08 Annual Fund Campaign a Huge Success

Click here to read a message from our 2007-08 Annual Fund Co-chairs

Dear Parents, Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the 2007-08 Annual Fund Campaign closed on July 31 at an all time record high of approximately HK$9.64 million (HK$10.64 gross). We want to thank all those who contributed their time, talent and treasures to making this campaign a success.

This year we had several new Annual Fund programs and initiatives, including the pilot High School Summer Internship Program and enhancements to Tai Tam field. Renovations of the field are well underway, so be sure to check out the progress on the live webcam on the HKIS Dragonnet (http://dragonnet.hkis.edu.hk/). This year we also had our first Golf Day, which raised important dollars for the Annual Fund. The Celebration Ball in May - An Evening on Mount Olympus - brought together around 650 community members to celebrate student achievement and raise funds for the school. We want to extend our deep appreciation to the Annual Fund Cabinet, Ball Committee and Golf Committee for making these events and programs possible.

It is through the generosity of our community that the Annual Fund can continue to invest in programs that augment and enhance the regular school curriculum. As we soon begin a new school year, it is our pleasure to introduce the new Annual Fund Co-chairs: parents Julie Fried and Glenn Jordan will join Clifford Chiu and Paul Pasin as the 2008-09 Annual Fund Co-chairs. Abbi DeLessio will continue serving HKIS in her new role on the HKIS Board of Managers and Dan Ryan will continue to serve on the Annual Fund Cabinet as the Corporate co-chair.

We wish you all a continued, enjoyable summer break and look forward to seeing you in the new school year.

Sincerely,
Clifford Chiu, Abbi DeLessio, Paul Pasin, Dan Ryan

HKIS Raises HK$488,000 for Sichuan and Myanmar

May 2008 was marred by two natural disasters, first the ravaging cyclone in Myanmar, and then the devastating earthquake in Sichuan. Millions of people were affected. As a school, HKIS joined together to lend a hand in the immense task of helping people in these areas to rebuild their lives.

At a divisional level, there were many individual and group efforts to raise money for the victims of these disasters. As well as raising much-needed sums for disaster relief, these initiatives also taught students valuable lessons about supporting others less fortunate than themselves. Learning that reinforced and furthered the HKIS mission of "…dedicating our hearts to compassion and our lives to service and global understanding."

In total, HKIS raised over HK$488,000 to help the earthquake victims of Sichuan and cyclone victims in Myanmar. Of this amount, the Middle School raised the most, an amazing HK$254,427, followed by Upper Primary which raised HK$133,107.

The money was donated to the HKIS Red Cross Fund for Sichuan and Myanmar. Some of the money also raised went to the Tzu-Chi Foundation, Hong Kong chapter. This Buddhist charity ensures all donations go directly to the needy recipients.
